Method
Place 2 champagne glasses and 2 long spoons in the freezer for 2-3 hours before serving. Combine all ingredients (except gingersnap crumbs) in a blender. Cover and blend for 10-15 seconds until well blended. Pour smoothie into frosted glasses, filling half full. Fill each glass with the gingersnap crumbs. Serve with the long chilled spoons and fresh mint, if desired.
Notes: Note: The caramel and gelato for this recipe can be found near the ice cream sections of grocery stores. The caramel is usually next to the cones and chocolate sauce. If you would like to substitute frozen yogurt or ice cream for the gelato, you will still achieve optimal results. Also, the Pear William liquor can be omitted for a non-alcoholic milkshake. Vanilla bean is costly, but very much adds to the mysterious and unique flavor of this shake. You can leave it out and still get an outstanding shake though. Star anise comes, whole and can be ground in a coffee grinder. I like to grind a cup at a time and save the ground star anise for later use. If your grocery store does not carry it, Asian markets will have it indefinitely. Store extra ground star anise in airtight containers
